Some couples plan a wedding. Chris and Julian planned an entire weekend, and every single hour of it was unforgettable. They traveled from Canada to Porto to celebrate their marriage, and what unfolded over three days was one of the most fun, most emotional, and most joy filled celebrations I have ever had the privilege of photographing.
Day One: A Welcome Party at Churchill’s
The celebration kicked off with a welcome party at Churchill’s, one of Porto’s most iconic port wine houses, where guests arriving from all over the world got their first taste of the weekend ahead. There was wine, there was laughter, and there was that particular kind of electricity that fills the air when a couple’s favorite people are all finally in the same city, ready to celebrate. It set the tone perfectly for everything that followed.
Day Two: Vows at The Yeatman, Overlooking Porto
The wedding ceremony took place at The Yeatman, a hilltop hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia known for its sweeping views over the Douro River and the rooftops of Porto. Few backdrops in this city compare to it. As Chris and Julian exchanged vows, the entire city seemed to stretch out behind them, the river catching the afternoon light, the historic center rising in the distance. It was a ceremony full of raw emotion, tears, laughter, and the unmistakable joy of two people who fought hard to build a life together and were finally standing in front of everyone they love to celebrate it.
Photographing a gay wedding this joyful and this openly loving is always a privilege, and this one carried an extra layer of meaning. Every glance between Chris and Julian said everything words could not.
Day Three: A Private Boat Party on the Douro
Just when it seemed the celebration could not get any better, the weekend closed with a private boat party on the Douro River. Music, dancing, wine, and the whole crew of friends and family who had traveled from Canada and beyond, all together on the water as Porto’s skyline slid by. It was the kind of ending that felt less like a wedding wrapping up and more like a friendship deepening in real time.
A Weekend, Not Just a Wedding
What made Chris and Julian’s celebration so special was the way it unfolded over three full days instead of a single afternoon. There was time to breathe, time to actually be together, and time for every moment, big or small, to be fully felt. From the first toast at Churchill’s to the last dance on the boat, this was a couple who understood that a wedding is not one event, it is a chapter, and they gave everyone around them the gift of living inside it for an entire weekend.
Chris and Julian, thank you for bringing your people all the way to Porto and for letting me capture every part of it. It was one of the best weekends of my year.
Dreaming of a multi day wedding celebration in Porto or anywhere else in Europe?
I photograph weddings for couples who want their celebration to feel like a full experience, not just a single day, from welcome parties to ceremonies to the last dance under the stars.
